I adore The Mighty Boosh. My brother first introduced me to them during my Easter holidays a few years ago, and at first I was a little weirded out, but it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the show. In general, I find that people are quite divided on the two main characters. They seem to split people right down the middle. Just as people seem to love either strawberry or chocolate ice cream, or either Seinfeld or Friends, people tend to love either Vince Noir or Howard Moon. People never seem to like them both about the same, or take a while to decide who their favourite is; they seem to immediately gravitate towards one or the other.
I’m a Vince girl myself, because I see a lot of myself in him. He’s quite childlike and easily distracted, and he and I seem to have that in common. We both love colouring and animals, and require no less than fifteen people working on our hair at any one time. Another thing that I love about Vince is his wardrobe.

Vince is an utter chameleon. He tends to flit about with fashion, dabbling in mod style one moment, and punk fashion the next. He’s been a mod, a goth, an electro raver, a punk, a glamour nan, and a funky innuit, and that’s in just five episodes! I love his ability to take a trend and latch on to it, taking it to the extreme before dropping it like a hot potato the second everybody else starts to follow suit. While I respect people who subscribe to a single style of dress, I find myself unable to commit. There are so many styles that I love to embrace, that my wardrobe is somewhat schizophrenic. There are girly dresses hanging next to Indian Saris, which are rubbing shoulders with punk-rock tees and vintage jeans. It’s a mess, but I love it. Like Vince, I prefer to dabble in many different styles, in order to avoid getting stagnant and to keep me on my toes.

Another thing I love about Vince is his ability to find fashion inspiration anywhere. He regularly reads Cheekbone magazine (a cutting-edge magazine that is published every three hours and delivered by ninjas), and so some of his inspiration comes from the mainstream cool scene. However, he manages to take articles of clothing from all eras and cultures and weave them into a unique look that is impossible to copy. He will wear anything from a Jacobean ruff, to a clear plastic rain slicker, from a mirror-ball suit, to a necklace made out of a piece of Lego. He’s the master of fashion improvisation.
Vince also understands the importance of accessorizing. The extra bits and pieces like hats, belts and scarves are what make an outfit, and Vince is never without an outlandish hat or awesome ring. He is known for stealing shoes and can be bribed with a brightly coloured cape.
Even though he’s a guy, I can’t help but give props to Vince Noir for his awesome creativity and style. I can only hope that one day I will be as uber cool as Vince.
